A Learning City...

Imbali Education Precinct (IEP)

The concept of an educational precinct, and the Imbali Education Precinct (IEP) in particular, emanates from a vision of the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Nzimande and local educationists, to build on the unique mix of educational institutions in a relatively confined geographic space within Imbali, Pietermaritzburg. The Minister’s idea is to make education relevant to the learning needs of the City and establish the precinct as a place of innovation in education, relevant on a national scale. Against this backdrop, a Steering Committee was appointed in 2013 by the Minister to establish the precinct. The Steering Committee commissioned a Technical Task Team (TTT) to prepare a report for the Minister on how the IEP may be developed. MIDI was appointed to coordinate the work of the TTT. A wide range of stakeholders have been engaged the development of the IEP, from national to local public and private institutions. Two reports have been compiled; the first, entitled Development Framework for the Establishment of the Imbali Education Precinct was approved by the Minister in February 2014. The second, the Development Plan for the IEP will be submitted to the Minister in the near future. That report should pave the way for implementation of new ideas and infrastructure of the precinct with outputs and activities that will lead to full establishment of the precinct over a 15 year period. The precinct promises to be one of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) new flagship initiatives that will pave the way for the kind of education system of which the nation can be proud.
