MIDI - Msunduzi Innovation and Development Institute
In Creating the City We Deserve, the “Safe Passages project for Children and Youth” provides an opportunity for MIDI to work towards achieving the vision of a SAFE city. Through discussions with stakeholders at the MIDI Stakeholders Forum before we can achieve this vision, we acknowledge that the Inner City poses a threat to the safety of children and youth who move through the Inner City daily to and from school or college.
Through a partnership with the Children in Distress Network (CINDI) learners and students from eight inner city schools and colleges are being mentored to speak out about what makes them feel unsafe and vulnerable. A bus tour through the Inner City was arranged where children and youth could point out the dangers they face. This was followed by a workshop where children and youth showed actual photographs of the unsafe areas around their schools and colleges.
Activities to follow include a three day camp in December to prepare the MIDI Safety Ambassadors for a presentation to a Full Council meeting in January 2014, a City-Wide Summit to be held in July 2104 where the MIDI Safety Ambassadors will present a report on the State of the City for Children and Youth. The Summit will lead to the formation of a Youth Led Forum who will be recognised by the City as Ambassadors who participate in Community Engagement processes to review the Integrated Business Plan (IDP) and promote the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI).
