The KZN Winter Air Tour 2013 was the second annual event in a three year programme funded by the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Treasury and KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Department of Economic Development and Tourism. The Tour took place over a seven week period in the months of June and July of each year. The 2012 Tour consisted of six Shows over seven weeks at six regional airports – Newcastle, Ulundi, Richards Bay, Pietermaritzburg, Margate and Virginia – around KZN. In 2013 Mkuze was added to the line-up as the seventh show and announced as ‘free’.
The Tour is an attempt to promote aviation and attract tourism in KZN as well as serve as an economic mechanism to upgrade and generate revenue for the regional airports. Furthermore, it is intended to serve as a tool to introduce young South Africans to the career opportunities available in the aviation industry. The monitoring and evaluation study undertaken by MIDI seeks to assess the ability of the Tour to achieve these outcomes and become self-sustaining by gaining private sponsorship. The concern of securing private sponsorship grows bigger as the period of funding draws closer to an end.
