MIDI - Msunduzi Innovation and Development Institute
MIDI hosted a group of students from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina (USA) from the 20th-29th October. Students came to visit the city of Pietermaritzburg to get an understanding of the functioning of government, community engagement processes and implementation of public policy at a local and provincial level.
This is the second consecutive year that the programme is taking place. As part of their visit, MIDI took the students on a tour of the city to give them an understanding of how South Africa’s apartheid legacy continues to impact life today and how many inequalities remain. The students were also invited to participate in a full Council Meeting of the Msunduzi Municipality where they were introduced to the leadership of the city.
The visit was all in all a resounding success. MIDI looks forward to the report from the Municipal Manager’s office on the student’s visit and work (as per full council resolution).
